Microsoft Office 2007 (officially called 2007 Microsoft Office System) is a Windows version of the Microsoft Office System, Microsoft's productivity suite. Formerly known as Office 12 in the initial stages of its beta cycle, it was released to volume license customers on November 30, 2006 and made available to retail customers on January 30, 2007. These are, respectively, the same dates Windows Vista was released to volume licensing and retail customers. Office 2007 contains a number of new features, the most notable of which is the entirely new graphical user interface called the Fluent User Interface (initially referred to as the Ribbon User Interface), replacing the menus and toolbars – which have been the cornerstone of Office since its inception – with a tabbed toolbar, known as the Ribbon. Office 2007 requires Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or higher, Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 or higher, Windows Vista or Windows 7. Office 2007 is the last version of Microsoft Office available for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.

The 'Ribbon User Interface' is a task-oriented Graphical User Interface (GUI). It features a central menu button, widely known as the 'Office Button'. The Ribbon Interface has been improved in Microsoft Office 2010.

Office 2007 also includes new applications and server-side tools. Chief among these is Groove, a collaboration and communication suite for smaller businesses, which was originally developed by Groove Networks before being acquired by Microsoft in 2005. Also included is Office SharePoint Server 2007, a major revision to the server platform for Office applications, which supports "Excel Services", a client-server architecture for supporting Excel workbooks that are shared in real time between multiple machines, and are also viewable and editable through a web page.

Microsoft FrontPage has been removed from the Office suite entirely. It has been replaced by Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer, which is aimed towards development of SharePoint portals. Its designer-oriented counterpart Microsoft Expression Web is targeted for general web development. However, neither application has been included in Office 2007.

Speech recognition and handwriting recognition are now part of Windows Vista. Speech and ink components have been removed from Office 2007. Handwriting and speech recognition work with Office 2007 only on Windows Vista or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. However, XP users can use an earlier version of Office to use speech recognition.

According to Forrester Research, as of May 2010, Microsoft Office 2007 is used in 81% of enterprises.

People who wave placards and hold symbolic burnings are upset about Medal Of Honor, but they really needn’t be. EA’s reboot of the war-themed shooter sees the series evacuated out of World War II and redeployed into the present-day conflict in Afghanistan. Much pre-emptive fury has been directed at the prospect of playing a Taliban soldier in multiplayer - claiming offence to Our Boys. Detractors are late to that party, given that Nazis and non-specific terrorist organisations have long since been considered fair game, but the real kicker for EA is that it’s made such an obvious effort to revere the soldiers the game is now accused of insulting.

In its campaign mode, MOH is almost a paean to the decency of US military personnel - even if it pointedly saves its admiration for the troops on the ground rather than those commanding the forces from afar. In fact, it is so keen to exonerate the soldiers themselves, who all operate with the utmost virtue, that it comes across with the forceful naivety of propaganda. This is not the sort of war in which US air support blithely shreds civilian vehicles or in which US troops keep as mementos body parts of murdered Afghans. And by focusing on an early part of the conflict, this is not the sort of war in which enemies shelter beneath civilians or use IEDs to pick away at the numbers and sanity of a beleaguered occupying force. This is not, in other words, really the sort of war being currently fought.

Whatever its bias or excisions, MOH rejects the sort of gung-ho globetrotting baloney seen in Modern Warfare, and makes an honest attempt not to trivialise the lives of US soldiers, creating an air of sober authenticity which is unusual among shooters. It is perhaps a small watershed - bringing some degree of credible soldierly tactics to what is otherwise blockbuster entertainment. While it’s possible to run and gun, the game impresses upon you the importance of ‘no movement without fire’, maintaining ‘noise discipline’, and avoiding silhouetting yourself against the sky.

Terms like ‘danger close’ are more than just fetishistic military gabble - many of the game’s set-pieces involve marking targets for artillery and air support - something which the troops are not keen to do while standing nearby. But MOH’s major triumph is in describing, albeit in airport-paperback terms, how different branches of the military work together. Control zips between different members of the armed forces like a relay race - SEALs perform subversion and reconnaissance behind enemy lines, while Tier 1 operators mark and snipe embedded mortar positions, and the Rangers plough headlong into enemy forces with the support of overwhelming air power.

Though it paints a broad picture of an invasion force conducting itself with appropriate military rigour, this is still a heavily scripted, linear shooting gallery in which hordes of enemies bundle towards you without any thought of of self-preservation. But the game turns this crude tenet to its advantage in missions where retreat becomes essential; several key moments deal in simple survival, as the numbers of enemies overwhelm, whittling down and working around your remaining cover.

The previous avast! antivirus 4.8 Home Edition looked more like a media player utility than an antivirus app. If that wasn't strange enough, the included "skins" feature could make it look like just about anything. With version 5.0 avast! gets a more standard rectangular appearance. You can't disguise it as a Star Trek instrument panel any more, but finding features is a lot easier.

Like Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010 has been available in beta so long and so publicly (and has run so reliably) that the actual launch might almost seem an anti-climax.

Around 7.5 million people have downloaded various versions of it, and the Office team has had 650,000 individual feedback reports - and those have changed things, particularly in Outlook and OneNote.

Office 2010's UK release date is 12 May (although large businesses and developers can get Office Standard and Professional Plus 2010 already) and three versions, Office Home and Student 2010, Office Home and Business 2010, and Office Professional 2010, will be in the shops in June.

Daemon Tools Pro is the most advanced and capable virtual optical drive software on the market - for non-copy-protected discs.

The Lite version of Daemon Tools is a great little freebie for mounting ISO and other images as virtual CD/DVD drives, but the Pro Advanced and Pro Standard versions of Daemon Tools Pro offer considerably more functionality. If you deal with CD/DVD/Blu-ray images on a regular basis, they just might be worth the 25 or 40 euros they'll set you back.

The first thing you'll notice about either Daemon Tools Pro version is that there's a straightforward, easy-to-use GUI--no command line visits for advanced features as there are with Lite. Both Pro Standard and Advanced also support more virtual devices: 16 and 32 drives respectively, and Advanced offers 2 virtual IDE devices in addition to the Lite and Standard version's SCSI devices. Both Pro versions also let you mount the contents of an optical disc to an NTFS folder (instead of a drive) as well as letting you edit images (add, delete files, etc.).

Both the Standard and Advanced versions of Daemon Tools Pro offer cataloging and creation of image files, but Advanced takes things one step further with conversion between various image types. All versions support a number of file formats: plain and compressed ISO files and media descriptor (MDS), for starters, as well as the formats belonging to Blindwrite, Blindread, Nero, CloneCD, DiskJuggler, and InstantCD/DVD images.

The only real negative to Daemon Tools Pro is that neither the Advanced nor the Standard versions (nor the free Lite, of course) handle copy-protected discs.

It's only July, but our forward-thinking comrades at Kaspersky Lab have already delivered their 2011 internet security suite. Expectations are high, as Kaspersky was once a regular PC Pro recommendation, but in the past 18 months it's struggled to compete with stellar detection rates from Avira and Norton.

At first glance, that hasn't changed: from a selection of more than 300 current malware samples, Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 (KIS 2011) positively identified an impressive 96%, but A-List champ Norton 2010 hit 99%, with Avira just a whisker behind on 98%.

Yet Kaspersky's 2011 suite has a new ace up its sleeve. Although it didn't recognise all of our samples, it noted that those it didn't know were unsigned and not commonly found on other Kaspersky subscribers' PCs, and quietly flagged them as suspicious. When we actually tried to run them, and they started trying to dig their way into our system settings, the software rightly intervened and raised the alarm. It's a similar approach to the Insight and SONAR 2 systems found in Norton Internet Security 2010, but there's no shame in that: arguably, it gives more credibility than a perfect detection score would.

Another new feature is "Safe Run for Websites", which builds on the sandboxing system for applications that first appeared in the 2010 suite. Now you can run your browser in a protected mode - with a conspicuous green border - that prevents rogue processes from snooping on its traffic and cached data. Tell the software the URL of your bank and it will automatically open a "safe" browser whenever you go there.

In football, sometimes it's not about the big signings or the headline additions. Take Ferguson's United; at its spine are the same core players that have helped the club dominate domestic football for the best part of a decade, and no number of star signings elsewhere in Manchester look likely to change that. EA Sports' FIFA 11 is a similar proposition; there are no grandstand new features to dazzle and no major upheavals to the existing formula, but that doesn't stop it from being the best FIFA yet and by extension perhaps the best football game there's ever been.
